AIMS delivers its new CTS-AutoMax software solution to a purpose built factory for modem refurbishment and repair.

The successful installation of the modem test and repair line is welcomed by our customer to fulfil test times and repair modem throughput. The customer's analysis of the test results has allowed the refinement of the customer's test procedures and content to maximise throughput while maintaining quality. The repair company are seeking more telecom operators requiring VDSL2 modem testing & repair to expand the repair facility.

UK issues with third party testing highlight a global problem

Testing new products for their compliance to industry standards plays an increasingly critical part in ensuring the product's successful entry into the market.

Often, third party testing is the first point at which problems become clear and this can lead to delays in the launch of the product and additional development costs to put right any issues. Also, since time for testing within the third party test facility is always limited and costly, it is generally very difficult to obtain a full analysis of why the device may have failed the test. So developers are left working ‘in the dark' to put things right. Sending devices for re-testing - sometimes several times - is inefficient, time-consuming, costly and ultimately very frustrating. It is also unnecessary.

One of the simplest and most effective solutions to this is to undertake in-house pre-testing of products before they go for any third party testing.

AIMS International CEO, Doug Hay says that vendors who have gone down this pre-testing route have found it to be of great benefit: “The first advantage of in-house testing is that products can be prepared for the full third party testing to a point where they will pass first time, saving the high cost of submitting devices more than once.”

A second benefit, highlighted by Doug Hay in a recent video interview (September 2014) is that in-house testing is not limited in terms of time, so there are plenty of opportunities for the analysis of the results from the testing. It provides insight into what is going wrong and allows issues to be put right before the product is submitted to test houses.

So why aren't more people doing in-house pre-testing? The major impediment is that many companies do not feel they have the in-house expertise for some of the specific tests that are required. However, this is something that AIMS International can help with in providing the technical know-how within the software to make the testing straightforward to carry out and support for customers as they initiate their own testing regimes.

Steps to successful in-house testing

The first step is to define which particular testing specification is relevant for the modems to pass. AIMS International can then advise on both the hardware and the software required to help execute a successful pre-testing programme.

Though this has been particularly highlighted in the UK as an issue, it is clearly also a world-wide problem. AIMS International, for example, has been helping Telekom Malaysia to overcome similar issues, providing both manual and automatic testing software which has been very successfully implemented and is delivering excellent results for the operator and its networks.

Case Study: Telekom Malaysia chooses AIMS International's GUI for adaptable testing of its IPTV services network

Telekom Malaysia, one of Asia's leading communications companies, turned to AIMS International for testing software that could be adapted to suit its specific needs.

Working with local Malaysia partner, Significant Technologies, AIMS was able to deliver a solution that allowed Telekom Malaysia to check the performance of the CPEs it was purchasing before deploying them in the network. This involved testing the achievable data rates both to and from the customer of the CPE within the context of a range of network scenarios. This was essential to ensure the delivery of IPTV streaming video services to Telekom Malaysia's residential customers.

Significant Technologies and AIMS worked together using the standard AIMS GUI software platform to control the test scenarios. However, due to Telekom Malaysia's specific needs, the test sequencer (automation) software was customised to suit the requirements, using standard Broadband Forum TR-100 and TR-114 test solutions.

During last month's CommunicAsia event in Singapore, we caught up with AIMS' sole distributor in Malaysia, Significant Technologies. Norazmi Ismail, General Manager Significant Technologies spoke about its latest project with the largest integrated solutions provider in Malaysia, Telekom Malaysia, explaining how AIMS' GUI software platform successfully met Telekom Malaysia's testing needs.

The success of the project stemmed from adaptability of the AIMS software, which can be customised to the needs of service providers to test varying network scenarios, preparing for all potential problems the network may face.

AIMS International Welcomes New Standard Specifications for Testing Vectored VDSL2

Finalisation of Broadband Forum's TR-249 creates level playing field and confirms testing platforms for Vectored VDSL2 systems.

Fife, Scotland, UK - March 17th 2014 - AIMS International, one of the foremost innovators and suppliers of cutting edge software solutions to the Broadband industry, has welcomed the finalisation of the Broadband Forum Technical Report on testing for Vectored VDSL2 systems – TR-249. The company, a Broadband Forum member, has been developing its testing platform in accordance with the proposals in the draft technical report and is ready to launch its TR-249-compliant test platform for vectored VDSL2 systems immediately.

Incorporating a powerful Graphical User Interface (GUI) to control Vectored VDSL2 test environments for modem testing, the AIMS International solution allows stringent testing according to global specifications published by the Broadband Forum and the NICC (BBF TR-249 and NICC 1436).

AIMS International, a Broadband Forum member, has been keen to see the completion of the TR-249 report and has aligned its development to the deliberations and conclusions of the working group and authors of the report in order to be ready with its test platform upon publication of the report. The company is therefore able to provide its customers with testing platforms for Vectored VDSL2 that conform to the accepted industry standards.

AIMS International Announces Advanced Vectored VDSL2 Testing

New integrated test solution provides efficient, cost-effective in-house interoperability and conformance testing for Vectored VDSL2 products and services.

AIMS International, one of the foremost innovators and suppliers of cutting edge software test solutions to the Broadband industry, is today launching its new Vectored VDSL2 Test solution, designed to enable telecoms operators to undertake internal testing on their Vectored VDSL2 modems.
