BUILDING ADAPTABLE TESTING SOFTWARE FOR TELEKOM MALAYSIA’S COMMUNICATIONS SERVICES

AIMS International’s GUI (Graphical User Interface) helps Telekom Malaysia deliver high performance IPTV services

THE CLIENT

Telekom Malaysia is the largest integrated solutions provider in Malaysia, and one of Asia's leading communications companies; with a market capitalisation of RM13.9 billion and a workforce of 26,629 employees. Telekom Malaysia offers a range of communications services and solutions in broadband, data and fixed line.

THE CHALLENGE

Telekom Malaysia needed a testing platform that would allow it to check the performance of the CPEs it was purchasing before deploying them in the network. This involved testing the achievable data rates both to and from the customer of the CPE within the context of a range of network scenarios. This was essential to ensure the delivery of IPTV streaming video services to Telekom Malaysia’s residential customers.

“The AIMS software is so flexible and we have been able to customise it in various ways to fit every scenario either for the network or for products. It can also be adapted to achieve different results, and to gain an in-depth understanding of the specification of the product as well as the network. The AIMS team has been very responsive in terms of customising the software to make it meet our specific requirements.”

General Manager

Significant Technologies

The company therefore wanted to use a testing platform that could be customised to meet its needs, and that would be able test the exact network scenarios its network could potentially face, ensuring that the company could continue to meet the needs of its customers. The test scenarios that Telekom Malaysia required had to emulate as closely as possible the network scenarios that exist throughout Southeast Asia.

THE SOLUTION

The first step was for the AIMS team to work closely with Telekom Malaysia and its suppliers to establish the operator’s exact requirements, since these were critical to the success of the project. Working closely with its in-country telecoms distributor, Significant Technologies, AIMS sought to ensure that it was able to create a platform that was versatile and easily adapted. Significant Technologies and AIMS worked together using the standard AIMS GUI software platform to control the test scenarios. However, due to Telekom Malaysia’s the specific needs, the test sequencer (automation) software was customised to suit the requirements, using standard Broadband Forum TR-100 and TR-114 test solutions.

The software had to be able to test both ADSL2+ and VDSL2 CPEs connected to DSLAMs supplied by both Huawei and ZTE. The AIMS software also controlled the line simulation and noise generation hardware that reproduces the required network scenarios in the Telekom Malaysia test laboratory, providing an exact simulation of the real network as required by Telekom Malaysia’. In order to be able to guarantee that a CPE can achieve a certain minimum data rate at X metres from the exchange under typical noise conditions is essential to ensure the delivery of IPTV, streaming video services to TM’s residential customers.

THE RESULTS

The highly customisable nature of the AIMS solution allowed Significant Technologies to work with Telekom Malaysia and provide it with the ideal testing platform that could emulate all the scenarios its network could face.

The flexibility of the AIMS software solution allowed the hardware to be moulded into the required testing environment and provide the performance data that Telekom Malaysia needed. This helped explain data rate issues that were being observed with CPEs from different suppliers and gave Telekom Malaysia the ability to grade the CPE appropriately for different network conditions.

THE FUTURE

Significant Technologies will continue to work with AIMS due to the very responsive relationship the two companies have built with one another. This working relationship has allowed the project with Telekom Malaysia to progress in a timely way, allowing for proactive changes and alterations to the software.

This project illustrates how, working with the right in-country distributor, AIMS is able to deliver a test solution anywhere in the world, adapted to local needs and any network scenario. With good communications links, fast and responsive support can be delivered to customers wherever they are.

AIMS has the skills and experience and the products and technologies in-house to deliver this level of support.

BUILDING ADAPTABLE TESTING SOFTWARE FOR TALKTALK’S COMMUNICATIONS SERVICES

AIMS International’s TDTS (The DSL Test System) helps TalkTalk deliver high performance broadband and voice services

TalkTalk needed a solution to allow in-house product testing, to improve its results when new products went for final third party testing and approval. AIMS International was able to demonstrate that it had the skills and experience and the products and technologies in-house to deliver this level of support. AIMS and TalkTalk have developed an excellent partnership which is delivering great results for TalkTalk’s product development and testing.

This project illustrates how AIMS is able to deliver test solutions adapted to the operator’s specific needs and scenarios. With good communications links, fast and responsive support can be delivered to customers wherever they are.

THE CLIENT

TalkTalk is the UK’s value provider of home phone, broadband, TV and mobile services, and operates Britain’s most extensive Next Generation Network. With a workforce of 2,515 employees, TalkTalk offers a range of communications services and solutions for both commercial and consumer use.

THE CHALLENGE

Operating in a highly innovative environment, TalkTalk is constantly bringing new products to market. These products need to be tested and approved for connection to the network. However, taking them to a third party test house without pre-testing was proving costly and inefficient, as the modems often did not pass on the first attempt. This was also exacerbated by the lack of information about test results, making it harder to rectify the problem before submitting the device for re-testing.

TalkTalk therefore wanted to be able to do some of the pre-testing in-house. To do so, the company needed a testing platform that would enable the pre-testing of modems in one step, allowing for minor adjustments and providing loop reach results that could be checked easily. This would give them full access to the results and analysis of the tests and the ability to get third party testing and approval right first time.

THE REQUIREMENT

TalkTalk wanted to be able to perform loop/reach tests under different environmental scenarios, simulating different line length and crosstalk noise conditions. The testing had to be automated, with a minimum of operator input. It also had to be able to provide an automated report, again with a minimum of operator effort.

THE SOLUTION

The first step was for the AIMS team to work closely with TalkTalk to establish the operator’s exact requirements, since these were critical to the success of the project. Once AIMS had the information needed, they were able to advise and create a platform that was versatile and accessible.

TalkTalk and AIMS worked together to define the combination of hardware and software that was required to fulfil the requirement. A system configuration was drawn up which utilised off-the-shelf hardware from Telebyte Inc., line simulator and noise generation equipment, plus standards-based TDTS test software solution from AIMS International. Using AIMS’ expertise this was integrated together to provide a solution running on a Windows PC platform which allowed an engineer to quickly configure the test configuration selections and start the test run.

On completion of the test run (which can last up to several hours – depending on the test selection made) the engineer could return to the test system, automatically generate a test report and submit it to the next stage of the test process. The software had to be able to control all the instrumentation as well as the DSLAM/MSAN which was connected to the modem under test. The AIMS TDTS software has been rigorously tested over many hours/years of use and has proven to be robust and reliable in controlling the different hardware elements and producing reliable, repeatable modem test results.

AIMS has also provided TalkTalk with training to bring the company’s in-house engineering team up to speed on the test equipment and software. AIMS also offers remote support for situations where an engineer needs to perform a few simple tests and is not familiar with the equipment. In this case the AIMS team can log into the test system remotely and help him step-by-step through the test process.

THE RESULTS

When using a third party test house, operators are restricted to a limited time-frame to carry out any testing. However, with its own in-house solution supplied by AIMS International, TalkTalk is able to carry out testing without these restrictions and had full access to the results and plenty of time for analysis. The AIMS solution allows TalkTalk to cost-effectively test its DSL modems, cutting the external testing process down from potentially numerous steps to just one. It also allows for easier checking of loop reach results when minor adjustments are being made to the modems, for example a new firmware update.

THE FUTURE

As technology continues to evolve, TalkTalk aims to continue working with AIMS due to the very responsive relationship the two companies have built with one another. With DSL developing all the time, AIMS has also created test solutions for VDSL2 and vectoring and this will inevitably be of interest to TalkTalk as its network grows and speeds increase in the future.
